Governor Mike DeWine has chosen to sign a shameful and unnecessary bill targeting transgender students in Ohio. This legislation, passed during the General Assembly’s lame-duck session, does nothing to solve real problems but instead weaponizes bigotry against some of the state’s most vulnerable youth.
There is no evidence—none—that transgender students using shared facilities have caused harm to other students in Ohio. This law is not a solution looking for a problem; it’s a cynical distraction designed to divide and demonize rather than unite and uplift.
While the General Assembly had the chance to address critical issues like improving healthcare access, caring for our elderly, or strengthening public education, they chose instead to enact policies of cruelty. Rather than working to truly "Make Ohio Great Again," they’ve shown a troubling commitment to "Make Ohio Hate Again."
Ohio’s families—including those with transgender children—deserve lawmakers who will unite us and solve real problems, not those who use their power to attack the marginalized. Families impacted by this decision are encouraged to seek support from community organizations, talk openly with their children, and remind them that many of us will continue to fight for their dignity, safety, and rights.
The politics of cruelty have no place in Ohio. Governor DeWine and the General Assembly owe every Ohioan an apology—and a commitment to do better.
